January 2012 Newsletter
Ok, so it's February... just like most of you, I've been busy too. Sorry for the delay in getting this newsletter out. But at least I've been training since the beginning of January. It's high time all you holiday-zoned out people got back into regular training! YOU know who you are....
Newtown classes
Just in case you didn't know or remember (I'm sure I would have told you last year) Newtown classes have started in full swing on Wednesdays as last term.
2012 Calendar
You'll note the calendar on the left hand side, showing our major events for the year. The RED hightlighted ones are our own events. Attendance at tournaments is highly recommended, and in the case of our own tournaments, compulsory - especially if you intend to grade!
Anniversary Celebrations

Time flies when you're having fun! March 1st is the 1st Anniversary of Kuro Obi Martial Arts and the opening of Petersham dojo. I'd like to organise some sort of celebration. IF you have any ideas or suggestions for what we might do, please let me know! Donations of "celebration accessories" (you know, food and drink and disposable 'spoon-and-forkery' etc...) will be gratefully accepted. Not sure about crackers, paper hats, and streamers though. The image at right was taken at the first training session at Kuro Obi dojo.
Protective equipment
With at least 10 tournaments happening (see the Important Dates on the left) in Sydney throughout the year by various organisations that we support (including 5 events of our own), it's probably time for everyone to pick up a set of mitts, shin-and-instep pads, and a mouthguard. They are required equipment for the AMAC tournaments, and advisable for camp and interclub tournaments.

IFKKA equipment and clothing
Apart from the above mentioned protective equipment, we also have a range of t-shirts, singlets, backpacks, and carry bags that you might be interested in. You can see more pictures of these items on this page. The backpacks are particularly useful for the kids, as it will hold all the karate gear, and school books and lunch. To go with the bag, we also have a drink bottle with silhouettes of some of our black belts doing kicks and punches, and there are still plenty of fund raising caps available in black or white for those who need some sun protection. Talk to me in the dojo if you're interesting in getting any of these items.
DVD/VCR Combo
I have a number of family and karate VHS tapes lying around the house that need to be brought into the 21st century. This is most easily done with a DVD/VCR combo player that can record DVD from the VCR, If you happen to have one in good functioning condition lying around that you could give, lend, or sell to me (at a reasonable price of course) I would be very happy to hear from you.
GRADING
The next grading, to be held in early March (date as yet to be confirmed) will be held in the Petersham dojo and I will be doing the assessment for my students. This means of course that I will be even stricter with regard to technique, because when the time comes for your green belt (4th kyu) and Shihan Doug, our head instructor, will be grading you again, and I want you to stand out as superior karateka!.
World's Greatest Shave Donation drive
For those of you who come to Petersham dojo, you might notice a small donation box on the counter. My daughter Zhana, currently in year 12, is fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation. Any small (or big) change would be welcome, or you can even make a bigger donation online as soon as I find out the details. She did it last year too. Here's a picture of her before and after on that occasion. Of course her hair hasn't grown back quite as long after just one year.
See you in class!!!
